The original search form to play with – rebuilt, not revived

This is a replica.

Markup and stylesheet come from the original 2020 front end. The server, the database with 55 million links and the crawlers are gone. Instead this page searches a small index about the project itself – entirely in your browser, no query ever leaves this page. The interface is in German, as it was.

How the demo works

Standard search: terms are combined with AND, “OR” offers alternatives, a leading minus excludes (e.g. “suchmaschine -google”). Hits are ranked by term frequency and the first 140 characters form the description – exactly like the original.

Image search: every image carries labels the way the Inception network and the OCR of the prototype would have stored them. The cat photos come from CatCatch.

Statistics: counts the search terms of this session – in the original the list came from the database.

With no box ticked, all types are searched, just as the prototype did.

The pages of this website, the thesis chapters as PDF jump targets, two downloadable Office documents (abstract and bibliography) and the most important tools and sources of the prototype as external links.
